Teaching About Genocide

This past Wednesday Dr. Jean-Paul Restoule and I hosted a new webinar on Teaching About Genocide.

I distinctly remember using that word in my teaching for the first time 10 years ago. While many in the audience nodded in agreement as I characterized Residential Schools and other colonial policies as contributing to Genocide, I remember a few members of one table at the back disengaging right away.

Genocide is a heavy term, and teaching about it requires a thoughtful approach. As Jasmine Wong from Facing History and Ourselves shared with us during the webinar, we have to think about how we can lead students safely into and safely out of the topic.
